تميزت طراز W116 بعدد من إبتكارات السلامة من ضمنها تغيير وضعية خزان الوقود حيث أصبح مكانه الجديد فوق المحور الخلفي للسيارة وذلك للحد من إشتعال الوقود وإنفجار السيارة في حال تعرضت للإصطدام من الخلف.
ابتكار السلامة الآخر الذي تميز هذا الطراز به هو نظام المكابح المانعة للإنغلاق “ABS” حيث أنه يمكن السائق من كبح السيارة أثناء الإنعطاف مما يوفر الكثير من الوقت لتفادي الإصطدام قدر الإمكان فيما أنه أصبح في الوقت الحالي ضمن التجهيزات الأساسية لغالبية السيارات الحديثة.
من الناحية الميكانيكية توفرت مرسيدس بنز الفئة S طراز W116 بعدد من المحركات أحدها من 6 إسطوانات والبقية من 8 إسطوانات، المحرك القياسي من 6 إسطوانات بسعة 2.8 ليتر كان مزودا إما بخالط تقليدي للوقود تحت تسمية 280S وينتج 158 حصان أو بنظام حقن الوقود المباشر 280SE/280SEL وينتج 185 حصان.
خيارات المحركات المكونة من 8 إسطوانات بشكل V8 تبدأ من محرك بسعة 3.5 لتر 350SE/350SEL يتصل بنظام الحقن المباشر ينتج 204 حصان، يوجد أيضا محرك أكبر وهو بسعة 4.5 لتر 450SE/450SEL وينتج 220 حصان.
أبرز هذا الجيل من الفئة S هو المحرك العملاق بسعة 6.9 لتر حيث أصبح إسمها 450SEL 6.9 للدلالة على سعة المحرك الحقيقية، المحرك أيضا كان يتألف من 8 إسطوانات بشكل V8 وكان ينتج 286 حصان وهو رقم لا يستهان به أبدا بالنسبة لسيارة جرى انتاجها في حقبة السبعينيات من القرن الماضي علما أنه جرى انتاجها حصرا بالخيار الطويل من قاعدة العجلات، ومن مميزات هذا الطراز الشهير، تعليقه الغازي ذاتي تعديل الارتفاع.
ويذكر أيضا، توفر خيار ديزل للسوق الأميركية الشمالية حصرا، ويتكون هذا المحرك الذي جهز طراز 350SD من خمس اسطوانات بسعة 3 لترات ومزود بشاحن تيربو، يولد قوة 230 حصان.

خيار الكوبيه لهذا الجيل من الفئة S تم تسويقه تحت تسمية “SLC” حيث جرى الإستعانة بقاعدة العجلات من طراز SL R107 مع زيادة طول الهيكل لتوفير المساحة الكافية للركاب في المقاعد الخلفية علما أن خيار الكوبيه في الأجيال اللاحقة جرى بناؤه على نفس قاعدة عجلات طراز الصالون.
يمكن معرفة المواصفات الأمريكية لسيارة مرسيدس بنز الفئة S طراز W116 من خلال المصابيح الأمامية الدائرية ووجود العواكس الحمراء على الأطراف الخارجية للمصابيح الخلفية بجانب الصوادم المطاطية السوداء التي تزيد من طول السيارة وذلك لتلبية شروط السلامة الخاصة بسوق السيارات الأمريكي.
