في وقت سابق تمكنت مرسيدس-بنز من حصد لقب سيارة الناس المحبوبة، الفضل في ذلك يعود إلى الفئة E طراز W114/W115 التي تمتعت بإعتماديتها العالية.
تم انتاج مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 في الفترة ما بين 1968 ولغاية 1976، تميزت السيارة بالطلب الكبير عليها، النتيجة هي انتاج 1.9 مليون وحدة منها مما ساعد آنذاك في تسجيل رقم قياسي للمبيعات بالنسبة لسيارة متوسطة الحجم.
تميز هذا الجيل من مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E بالخطوط الأنيقة للتصميم العام والفضل في ذلك يعود للمصمم الفرنسي الشهير بول بروك الذي اعتمد مفهوم عدم مجاراة موضة محددة في التصميم.
أبرز الإبتكارات التي جرى توفيرها هي التصميم الجديد للمحور الخلفي الذي ساعد في توفير الثبات المطلوب على كافة أنواع الطرقات، توفر هذا المحور في العديد من طرزات النجمة الثلاثية لاحقا وهي SL R107 والفئة S بطرازي W116 وW126 إضافة للجيل التالي من ذات الفئة E وهي W123.
يرمز الرقم 114 في تسمية مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 إلى خيارات المحرك السداسية الإسطوانات بسعات 2.3 و 2.5 و 2.8 ليتر فيما أن الرقم 115 هو للمحركات الرباعية الإسطوانات بسعات 2.0 و 2.2 و2.3 ليتر أيضا.
خيارات الهيكل كانت إما صالون أو كوبيه “250C” أو “250CE” كما توفر كذلك خيار قاعدة العجلات الطويلة بشكل خاص لبعض الأسواق أو لشركات النقل والسفريات كذلك وهو ما يفسر حجم الإنتاج الهائل والذي فاق كافة حجم انتاج النجمة الثلاثية في الفترو ما بين 1945 ولغاية 1968.
جرى تقسيم فترة انتاج مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 لفترتين :
الفترة الأولى : 1968 – 1972
يمكن تمييز طراز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 التي جرى انتاجها خلال هذه الفترة من خلال النظر للجهة الأمامية من السيارة حيث يوجد الصادم الخلفي الذي يحتوي على لوحة التسجيل في الأسفل وأيضا المثلث عند أطراف النوافذ الأمامية فيما أن المصابيح الخلفية ملساء فيما أن المرايا صغيرة الحجم ومثبتة على أطراف الأبواب.
خيارات المحرك لهذه الفترة الإنتاجية كانت بسعة 2.0 ليتر “200” أو 2.2 ليتر “220” كلاهما رباعي الإسطوانات ويتصل بخالط وقود تقليدي، يوجد أيضا خيارين من 6 إسطوانات أحدهما بسعة 2.3 ليتر “230” والآخر بسعة 2.5 ليتر، توفرت هذه السعة إما بخالط وقود تقليدي “250” أو مع نظام حقن مباشر للوقود “250E” وهو ما كان يعتبر ميزة غير مسبوقة آنذاك مما ساعد على توفير سهولة تشغيل أكبر.
الفترة الثانية : 1972 – 1976
شهدت الفترة الإنتاجية الثانية من مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 إدخال بعض التحسينات والتي تتمثل في إلغاء الزجاج المثلث للنوافذ الأمامية كما أن المرايا الجانبية أصبحت أكبر حجما ومثبتة عند الأطراف الأمامية للنوافذ لتوفير مجال رؤية أفضل، تم كذلك تغيير الحيز المخصص للوحة التسجيل في الصادم الأمامي لتصبح في الجهة الأعلى وتقسمه لجزأين، المصابيح الخلفية بدورها تخلت عن التصميم الأملس لصالح المخططة.
خيارات المحركات لهذه الفترة شهدت تغييرات طفيفة، المحرك بسعة 2.2 ليتر جرى تحديثه ليصبح بسعة 2.3 ليتر لكن تم تسويقه تحت تسمية 230.4 للإشارة أنه مكون من 4 إسطوانات، محرك 2.3 ليتر الأصلي أصبح بدوره يسوق 230.6 وذلك لتجنب حدوث أي ارتباك للزبائن.
شهدت هذه الفترة أيضا توفير خيار أكبر من المحركات وهو سداسي الإسطوانات بسعة 2.8 ليتر، توفر إما بخالط وقود تقليدي “280” أو مع نظام حقن مباشر للوقود “280E”.
لا تزال مرسيدس-بنز الفئة E طراز W114/W115 تحظى بالطلب عليها من قبل عشاق السيارات الكلاسيكية بسبب الجودة والمتانة العالية التي يتمتع بها الطراز، تمتاز هذه السيارة بسهولة ترميمها في حال كانت بحالة متوسطة أما في حال كانت تتمتع بحالة ممتازة كما لو خرجت من خط المصنع يمكن بيعها بسعر يناسب الجهد الذي جرى بذله.
